Portland Spirit + Tax-Free Shopping + Portland City Grill + Dinner at Jake's Seafood - Downtown

This is a very touristy but memorable day that includes a sightseeing cruise of Portland, shopping downtown, a cocktail 30 stories high at Portland City Grill, then dinner at Jake's. It's a great way to show off our bustling downtown while also fulfilling the number one request of most people visiting Portland: to eat seafood.

You can drive your parents around all day, but nothing shows Portland off better than a seat on the Portland Spirit. This two-hour sightseeing cruise runs all year long and boards at Salmon Street Springs Fountain at noon.

Here's your walking map for the day, plus Portland Spirit's parking and boarding instructions. You do need to make a reservation for the boat ride, so plan in advance by booking here and calling 503-226-1419 for a reservation at Jake's Crawfish. You'll need to arrive at 11:30 to board the boat.

You have two options for riding the wintertime, daytime Portland Spirit Cruise: you can pay $28 to ride on the boat or $38 dollars to eat lunch on the boat. With lunch only being $10 more, you might just want to bite the bullet and pay. Here is their sample menu. The food is not going to blow your mind, but it's still quite good.

Fantastic views of the bridges
The Portland Spirit ride lasts from noon to 2 PM, so you have some time to kill before dinner. If you did not eat lunch on the boat, walk north to Little Bird or for a taste of modern Portland food at its finest. Otherwise, you should take mom downtown to do some tax-free shopping.

We have a really nice Nordies!

After some shopping - or enduring watching female family members shop - everyone deserves a drink. Take Mom and Dad 30 stories above the city for happy hour at Portland City Grill. This landmark restaurant has happy hour Monday-Saturday at 4-7 PM and even on Sunday at 4 PM to 11 PM.

The views are fabulous, the drinks are stiff, and the food is cheap. What's not to like?

View on a clear winter day
The view is great on a cloudy day, too!
Hopefully you are approaching the dinner hour by now, so head down the elevators and either drive or walk eight blocks to Jake's Crawfish. Many Portlanders snub this McCormick & Schmick's restaurant because of the high prices and non-hipstery feel, but the food will knock your parents' socks off.

Thirty varieties of seafood are flown in daily
A cozy interior like a golf club banquet hall
If you have any room after dinner, walk two blocks to St. Cupcake for a little dessert! It's the perfect end to a great day.
