Bob's Red Mill Tour + Columbia Outlet + Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden + Otto's Sausage Kitchen - SE

Located out in Milwaukie by Dave's Killer Bread, Bob's Red Mill has top-notch soup and hot sandwiches, extensive shopping, and a large bulk food section. It's a great place to stop on your way out of town, especially if you are hungry. Note: they are closed on Sundays. Here's your map.

Bob's Red Mill is a a great place to bring the folks. It feels and looks like a New England country barn, plus all of their food is fabulous and healthy. They even serve breakfast all day! If you really want to make this trip over-the-top, get there at 10 AM sharp for a tour.

Next you are driving back north for a quick shopping trip to the Columbia Outlet in Sellwood. This is mostly a shopping stop for the men since they've likely endured women's shopping up until now. Columbia Outlet has great coats that last forever - I bought my favorite coat of all time there over five years ago. It's definitely worth a stop. Plus, there is a Starbuck's right across the street if you need a pick-me-up.

Next, you're off to the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden. Though not in its full summertime glory, this carefully planned park is easy to walk and features a beautiful lake. Admission is free from Labor Day to the end of February.

Finally, it's time to eat again. That's what you do with your parents on vacation, right? Take them to Otto's for a dizzying array of free cheese & sausage samples on toothpicks, made-to-order grilled sausages, and a deli where your mile-high sandwich is made to order.

Sausages, sausages, sausages. They're all made on site using top quality pork and/or beef from Cartlon Farms. Your choice of wiener will be grilled to order on an outside grill that is hand-tended all year round. You can then slather your sausage with sauerkraut, ketchup, mustard, onions, relish, etc.

Just how good are these dogs? Well, when you eat them in the company of other people, you all just sit there murmuring "mmmmm." Otto's sandwiches are also to-die-for, with the "Kitchen Sink" being a sandwich that makes memories.

After you are done gorging, you an pick up some preservative-free sandwich meat for noshing on later at home. Maybe you can even create something delicious with the bulk food you picked up at Bob's Red Mill....
